CHAPTER SIX

THE FOLLOWING MORNING, Vidal still couldn’t shake the niggling of his conscience at the way he’d left Eva so abruptly last night. She’d looked surprised. A little lost. And he’d almost forgotten he had a meeting, because he’d been so transfixed by watching her reaction to his house.

He’d expected her to be blasé. Judgemental. But she’d seemed enchanted. In fact... He had to concede that the Eva Flores he’d met over a week ago was proving to be quite the enigma.

One minute he thought she was the same cold and aloof girl he’d known, ready to reel him in only to lash out with a sting in the tail, and the next she seemed like someone who bore no resemblance to that person. Someone entirely new.

It was disconcerting.

He heard a sound and looked up from where he sat at the breakfast table, near the lap pool on the bottom terrace. Eva was walking towards him wearing faded jeans and a plain white shirt. Hair down, silky. Simple, classic.

Her face was expressionless and old instincts kicked in. The urge to protect himself while at the same time wanting to get underneath that smooth facade. He’d never met anyone who did it so well as her. She could give a masterclass in superiority without even saying a word. Her mother had been the same.

And he’d almost been feeling sorry for her!

She sat in a chair.

‘Good morning,’ he said, as his chef came to the table with some freshly baked pastries.

‘Santo, this is Eva.’

Eva looked up at Santo and smiled. ‘Nice to meet you, Santo.’

Vidal saw the man do a double take at Eva’s stunning smile. He almost did a double take himself. Santo left and Vidal caught Eva’s eye.

Her smile faded. ‘What?’

He shook his head. ‘Nothing.’ And then, ‘Did you sleep well?’

Her eyes widened. He noticed she wore no make-up. She was so naturally beautiful that she really was breathtaking.

‘My rooms are...amazing. I’m not used to such modern comforts.’

Vidal realised that the castillo might be impressive—but no one could describe it as comfortable. ‘I guess not. But you don’t ever have to go back to that lifestyle. Speaking of which, my legal team have the contracts detailing the terms of our agreement at my office. Your solicitor has sent an envoy from a firm here to represent you and make sure you’re happy with everything. We’ll go to the office after this.’

‘Okay...’

She sounded hesitant. ‘You’re not changing your mind?’ Vidal asked.

She shook her head and took a sip of coffee. ‘No, I just...can’t believe that it’s all happening so quickly and easily. The debts are...big.’ She looked at him. ‘Are you sure you’re not changing your mind? After all, I don’t know that my presence by your side is really going to be worth all that much.’

Vidal told himself that her self-deprecation was just a smokescreen. That maybe she was looking for something more.

He shook his head. ‘Not at all. It’s a viable business venture, I’m fulfilling my father’s wishes, and
